On motherhood

I have heard it a million times it seems. "Do you remember the pain of childbirth?" "No" they said. "It all fades away". I was skeptical of course, like anyone would be, as I glanced down at an expanding belly. But I now know what they were talking about. The pain, the tears, the fear, the uncertainty. It all fades away. Especially as I look down at my toddler, holding her little hand in mine as she marches across the playground telling me about the swings.

Of course the future holds secrets, unknowns, heartbreaks and delights. But like a dream, I see the future as a sweet, exciting and fantastic surprise. I guess that is what motherhood does. The pain fades and all that remains is the bliss. The joy of your child. The pure excitement in her little face as she empties out her sock and hat drawer, pausing long enough to try on each one of her hats.

Such a fashionista! May you always have many, many more delights than heartbreaks.
